Konbaung dynasty (Bodawpaya / Bagyidaw Min), Amarapura or 3rd Ava (Burma), ca. 1820


The Hintha bird with two rows of notable short neck feathers sits in upright position on a heavy hexagonal base.
Similar to the Karaweik 1 weights from the same period, the upper rim of the base is decorated with vertical notches.
Smooth surface with brown-greenish patina. Please note the angled shape of the handle.

Seated tiger figurine

In Chinese art the earliest depiction of tigers can be traced back over 4,000 years.
In Hindu religion goddess Durga seen often depicted riding a tiger.
The tiger is a zodiac animal in Burma and represents Monday as well as direction east.
Our small seated tiger shows grooves to represent the tiger's stripes.

With 12 1/2 viss this marble stone, nicely carved with geometric pattern, is the largest Burmese weight. The old piece is strongly worn from daily use on the rice market. It bears an inscription in Burmese characters: "12 ½ Peiktha"

Inscription in Burmese characters: "5 Peiktha"

Rare 5 viss weight from Mandalay in good condition with signs of use and scratches as well as a weight adjustment under the base (material removed). The weight mass of 7,4 kg for 5 viss is equal to the old standard of 15 g/tical. Therefor possibly this weight can be dated to the late 17th / early 18th century.

This rare 20 tical marble weight from Mandalay is strongly worn with smooth surface. The vertical decoration lines are still well visible. Probably this weight is also an earlier piece (old standard of 15 g/tical) or lost quite a lot of material due to the daily use on the market over the centuries.

7 copper inlays, one in front of the body below the beard, two left, two right on the body as well as both eyes with copper inlays.
Good condition with extensive wear and beautiful dark, natural patina.
There is an interesting copper-coloured forehead (not further examinated).

A fine example of this standard form with rich remnants of black coating and superb bronze patina.
The double line on the wings and decoration lines on the tail are still partly visible.
Please note that the weight lost material from wear, so that the mass is below the standard (15 grams per tical).

Two deep dotted decoration lines on the base, completed with a horizontal line below. Also the hairs on the four legs represented by dots. The weight is strongly worn, especially the horn right and the eye left. Otherwise the rare decoration and the silver bronze with beautiful patina makes this Chinthe very attractive.
