Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. 1900.

First and last page made from doubled sheets of paper, covered with black lacquer and frame-shaped design.
Beside the text pages the book contains 10 double-pages with two coloured illustrations on each, showing scenes from the legend of Phra Malai.
Text in Khom Thai script - a variant of Khmer script - used in Thailand to write religious texts.
First and second page contains various donor’s inscriptions (pls see Christmas Special 2019). dimensions:
665 x 180 x 145 mm / 26.2 x 7.0 x 5.7 in
age: before 1927, probably late 19th / early 20th century

condition: slightly damaged, some pages with water stains, all illustrations in good condition (please see photos)

Rare Kammavaca with 7 lines of Burmese "round" script.

complete Buddhist manuscript, 10 leaves made of strips of coarse cloth / monk's robe plus 2 wooden covers

cover: 60 x 13,8 cm (23.6 x 5.4 in)
leaves: 57,8 x 13,9 cm (22.8 x 5.5 in)
age: late 19th/early 20th century

cover with donor's inscription (dated 1257 = 1895), Western angels in Myanmar dress and lions, running lions/dragons also depicted on the leaves

condition: most minor chips, gilding partly rubbed, overall very good condition commensurate with age and use.

provenance: German collection, aquired late 1970's / early 1980's

complete Buddhist manuscript, 16 leaves made of strips of coarse cloth / monk's robe plus 2 wooden covers

leaves: 57,8 x 13,8 cm (22.8 x 5.43 in)
age: late 19th/early 20th century

front cover with donor's inscription (dated 12?? not clear visible anymore), 6-lines magyi si sar (tamarind seed script), both covers also gilded and decorated inside, some leaves with bookmarks (orange cross sign top left and/or red dot top right)

condition: two leaves broken and roughly repaired (glued), at covers and leaves gilding partly rubbed, otherwise in very good condition.

provenance: German collection, aquired late 1970's / early 1980's

Title indicators, usually made of palm leaf or wood, were important to identify the manuscripts.
Rare title indicator with Khom Thai script - a variant of Khmer script -used for Thai manuscripts.
Beautiful carved floral ornaments. Script in black ink. Traces of red colour (lacquer ?).

Burma (Myanmar), dated 1941


Made of Mulberry bark paper, hand-written in Burmese script / Pali language, dated 1303 M. E. (1941 AD), about 73 double-pages.
Covers and edges with rich gilding / gold painting.
condition: signs of age and use, cover with scratches, some wear to the edges but intact and overall in good condition

Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma

dated 1271 (1909)
Colours slightly faded, but otherwise the ribbon is still in rare excellent condition for a 110 years old textile.
A multicolour (red, green, yellow) sazigyo.
Rich detailed decoration with dagundaing, pyinsarupa, padaythabin, waythondaye, parasol, fishes, birds and geometric ornaments.
The first word "Zeyatu" (Success) can be read between the two beasts.

With clear good colours and contrast, the ribbon is in rare excellent condition for a over 110 years old textile.
A multicolour (yellow, blue green, red) sazigyo.
Rich detailled decoration with a very special dagundaing wave weaving, pyinsarupa, padaythabin, waythondaye, fishes and geometric ornaments.
The first word "Zeyatu" (Success) can be read between the two beasts. A really beautiful example of sazigyo weaving.
